Buea DO threatens to punish chief for challenging Governor’s ‘marching orders’

The Divisional Officer of Buea Paul Wokam Kouam has threatened to punish the President of the South West Chiefs’ Conference Mafany Njie for challenging the orders of the Governor of the South West region for Buea Chiefs to march on May 20.

The D.O described Chief Mafany Njie’s outing last month as calamnious to the person of the Governor of the South West region Bernard Okalia Bilai and reminded his ‘agitations’ are “punishable both at administrative, disciplinary and penal levels”.

Paul Wokam Kouam frowned at the President of the South West Chiefs’ Conference saying his actions not only demobilise the population ahead of the National Day celebrations but also undermine the relentless efforts put in place by authorities in the region for the success of the event.

It should be recalled that the President of the South West Chiefs Conference,HRH Mafany Njie signed a communique on April 30 condemning an order from the Governor of the South West region forcing chiefs in Buea to march on May 20 with their subjects.

Governor Bernard Okalia Bilai passed the order during the first preparatory meeting ahead of the May 20 celebrations as he said chiefs who fail to march will be dethroned after thirty days.
The chiefs through the President of the South West Chiefs Conference said this was an attempt by the Governor to undermine their tradition.
