AS Matelots of Douala’s team bus was involved in a road accident at the locality of Balessing in the West Region of Cameroon, on their way to the CENAJES Stadium in Dschang to face Unisport of Bafang in a day eight encounter of Cameroon’s Elite Two Championship.
According to eye witness reports and sources close to the club, the AS Matelots bus tried to overtake two cars in front of it before running into a third car that was crossing the road, which the driver had not seen.
Fortunately, no deaths were recorded though some players sustained some serious injuries.
Chapet sustained a head injury, while Arthur Eric Cantona, Yannick Che Fru, Frank Steve Deogne and Mali va Kelvin all had knee injuries.
The injured players were taken to the Balessing health facility where they received medical attention.
Three of the players returned home for proper medical check up while the other two. Maliva Kelvin and Yannick Che Fru arc still in camp with the team in Baffoussam from where the team will be traveling back to Limbe this evening at 5:00 PM.
The team attempted to have their game with Unisport postponed because of the trauma and injuries sustained by some of their key players, but match officials led by game coordinator Kenne Augustine, match commissioner Ngadi Sylvestre and central referee Koagne Tamba. turned down their request on the basis that the league organizers did not have any knowledge of the accident and that they could not on their own postpone the game without a word from Fecafoot in Yaoundé.
AS Matelots went on to play and were understandably beaten by Unisport of Bafang 2-0.
Their, next game will be in Limbe on Tuesday December 3, 2019 against newly promoted Stade of Bertoua.
