The Bonanajo Magistrate Court in Douala, Wouri division. Littoral region is reported to have slammed a six month sentence on some 19 supporters of the opposition Cameroon Renaissance Movement. MRC, political party.
The ruling reportedly surfaced Friday November 29. Reports hold that the individuals are part of a group of persons who defied administrative restrictions to protest on June I. 2019.
They are said to have stepped on the streets in respond to a protest march which the MRC announced.
Lawyers tor the concerned are said to have entered an appeal against the ruling. Incarcerated MRC Vice President, Mamadou Mota, announced the July protests. Then. MRC National President Maurice Kamto. and allies at the 2018 presidential election were still behind bars.
Mota too was arrested within the context of that rally and thrown into prison. He, in a press briefing prior to the political action, declared he was not afraid of going to prison.
These developments add to a series of controversies involving the MRC. These MRC supporters and others across the countiy did not benefit from the October 4 presidential decision that ended judicial proceedings against Kamto and his peers before the military tribunals.
Lawyers of the detained supporters have been battling within the legal corridors to expand the October action to benefit those facing the law before civil courts.
Yet prosecutors are said to have argued that the decision of President Biya talked of judicial proceedings before militaiy tribunals and not civil courts.
The MRC a rising voice within the opposition space will not take pair in. the February 9, 2020 polls. Its leader, Maurice Kamto, unveiled the decision on November 25 in what has till date left the political classes in shock.
Kamto claimed the electoral code needs to be amended for credible elections. The University don turned politician declared the need for an end to the crisis in the North West and South West regions and what he said was administrative bottlenecks against his party’s aspirants.
Since October 2018 til! date, Kamto continues to reject results of the last Presidential polls. The MRC then launched what it calls protest against “electoral holdup”. Added to this, it has asked for investigations into the nation’s abortive 2019 African Cup of Nations, AFCON tournament.
